THE CASK OF AMONTILLADO

The Cask of Amontillado

by Edgar Allan Poe

  • Biography:
Edgar Allan Poe borned on January 19 of  1809, was an American writer, poet, critic and editor best known for evocative short stories and poems that captured the imagination and interest of readers around the world. His imaginative storytelling and tales of mystery and horror gave birth to the modern detective story. Many of Poe’s works, including “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Fall of the House of Usher,” became literary classics. Some aspects of Poe’s life, like his literature, is shrouded in mystery, and the lines between fact and fiction have been blurred substantially since his death on  October 7 of 1849.

  • Historical Background:
Although Poe blamed Allan’s stinginess, his own gambling debts played a large role in his fiscal woes. A tendency to cast blame on others, without admitting his own faults, characterized Poe’s relationship with many people, most significantly Allan. Poe struggled with a view of Allan as a false father, generous enough to take him in at age three, but never dedicated enough to adopt him as a true son. There are echoes of Poe’s upbringing in his works, as sick mothers and guilty fathers appear in many of his tales.

  • Expectations:
when I read the tittle of the book, a suposed the story is about a cask and the Amontillado is a place or something like that. it could be happen in a place on the montains and some people will look it, and one man want to find it in the montainns of Amontillado and have to go with more people atthe looking. finally, they can find it and discover the mistery of the Cask of Amontillado.

  • Analysis/connection between literary works and historical background:
Although he long had a reputation in Europe as one of America’s most original writers, only in the latter half of the -twentieth century has Poe been viewed as a crucial contributor to the American Renaissance.

  • Literary movement:
That's a realism movement, because in the story, the author describe the characters like their forms of personality, on that story happen things very commun and easy to understand. the realism is a movement where the author can express their ideas but, using the reality like a base of the story, and looks forms to show the reality how really is.
  • Country:
Unfiction:
That story is a nonfiction genre, because the story using real people, an actual event,is a real plot, where the reality is the most improtant thing, events that would be part of the reality.

  • Did you confirm your predictions?
I do not know exactly if I confirm my predictions, because I saw the story is about a Cask, that is so true, but The context of the story is completly diferent, in the story, is about a man who wants to have a revange with other man, and the story is so interesting about problems and discussions about it.
